DRAINAGE ENGINEERS COURSE

 

Beginning in 2011, the Land Drainage Committee of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers will offer a Drainage Engineers Course. The course will focus on the responsibilities assigned to the engineer under the Drainage Act; there will be very little focus on the design aspects of drainage systems.

 

Audience 
This course is being offered to employees of engineering firms involved in preparing reports under the Drainage Act. The course is limited to the first 30 applicants. Any applications from individuals not employed by engineering firms will be held on a waiting list and will be considered on a first come, first-served basis if the course is not filled by the application deadline.

 

Course Description

The course will be offered in three separate sessions over a three year period. The three sessions include:

 

Session 1 (Next Offering, October 2014) 
Topics include: 
- The engineer’s role under the Drainage Act 
- Project scoping meetings 
- Legal aspect of petitions and the area requiring drainage
- Section 78 work
- Preliminary office work
- On-site meetings
- Preliminary reports
- Field work 
- Content of reports
- Sufficient outlet

 

Session 2 (October 18, 2012)
Topics include: 
- Assessments 
- Allowances 
- Design considerations

 

Session 3 (October 17, 2013) 
Topics include: 
- Summary of legislation that must be considered in reports under the Drainage Act 
- Environmental appraisals
- Benefit cost statements
- Section 40 reports
- Severance and land use change reports (S.65) 
- New assessment schedule reports (S.76)

 

Date 
Session 2 - October 18, 2012 from noon to 5:30 p.m., the day before the Drainage Engineers Conference.
